Standing tall above the fray
The mighty Mackinac bridge allows
Traffic from the upper to the lower
And vice versa: cars, trucks, cycles
Two towers stand with hands on hips
Holding the bed suspended above the lakes
Where Michigan and Huron exchange their waters
White, powerful, reaching deeply into the foam
The cold deep of the Great Lakes
Where ships have met their rest
And wind curls round and round
Should anyone fail to follow the rules
They may find the harsh result in being tossed
Over the cabled sides in some exchange of fear
The long, five-mile stretch a lesson
For those who care to see the beauty
Of our grand peninsulas
