Mighty Mac

Standing tall above the fray
The mighty Mackinac bridge allows
Traffic from the upper to the lower
And vice versa: cars, trucks, cycles
Two towers stand with hands on hips
Holding the bed suspended above the lakes
Where Michigan and Huron exchange their waters
White, powerful, reaching deeply into the foam
The cold deep of the Great Lakes
Where ships have met their rest
And wind curls round and round
Should anyone fail to follow the rules
They may find the harsh result in being tossed
Over the cabled sides in some exchange of fear
The long, five-mile stretch a lesson
For those who care to see the beauty

Of our grand peninsulas

The Empty Chair

Where once you sat beside me
As my dear companion true
Held your breath watching mysteries
In your dreams a vacant hue
I need to hear you whisper
Where there were gentle snores
I find it hard to recall moments
When we laughed or had smores
My dear one I so miss you
Though it may not seem its so
My tears fall in lonely moments
When my thoughts stray to you
I hope that you are happy
In the ways that Heaven blends
Our past and our good fortune
When our days are at their ends
I know you must be happy
Where you are there is no pain
You’re with your one true sweetheart
And your ma and pa again
So I will put my tears away
For a day when I am sad
And never give you reason
To think my life is bad
I will raise my head in pleasure
Though I see your touch everywhere
I love you and I miss you

In the lovely empty chair

Circles

All of the circles wind around me
The hurricane is dark and torrid
Alerts go out toward everyone
In a spin and a dip and a twist
Amazing illuminations fizzle in the dust
Nothing new is noted today
All of the hopes for tomorrow have fallen
Into the pit of deception and greed
We choke in the desperate depths
But there is nothing that can protect

And support the way of right, of truth
