Understand

Turning corners can be upsetting
Embracing the new, letting go the old
Grasping what you desire in the mix
Choices we make form our future
Can you picture the way you wish life to go?
Truly, in the long run it matters
It makes the seas in which we swim
Rough and choppy or smooth sailing
Choose your friends well
For their respect of you must grow
As must your respect for yourself
Let your heart guide you in big and small
But use your mind to gather the sails
Know who you are, that you are grand
Touch all those you know with love
And share your gifts with those who understand

Never Been

The skies heavy with dark clouds
The wind, patient, but anger-filled
The whole world is in a worry
Not for their people, but for their place
In history, in geography, in physics
We are in a whirl of uncertainty
Because these are troubled times
Who can be certain that one means
That truth, when truth has alternatives
And the great truth of mankind shudders
What can it all mean for humanity
When the Earth, herself, is rocking
On her axis, and exploding in ways
That have never been like this before

Countenance of Honor

In honor of Kobe Bryant, may he rest in peace.

Why do the best of us fall before their time
The tragic passing of those who uplift us
Bears the burden of justifying this to our children
Why are the good taken before their time
Those who stand for right and goodness and hope
So sad that they become symbols of injustice
Although we commit them to memory
The honest, the forward-thinking, the inspirational
How we bleed for the best that humanity has to offer
When they are taken for no good reason
Yet, we shall remember the good deeds
We shall remember the countenance of honor

Aches and Pains

Does it matter how we feel each day
The headaches and the pains
With age comes frightful wanderings
Among the thorns and strains
Of everyday living, rising and reclining
As we suffer through the twinges
We don’t know the cause or need
We just know the pain in our hinges
All at once it comes into awareness
That something pauses our wellbeing
More trips to the doctor’s
More draws of blood that sting
It’s not an awful thing that age begets
The challenges of stiffness as it sets
Upon the body as we older get
The best of age is coming as we let

Great Love

The day barely begins as I take my morning breath
I wander to the kitchen to make coffee
The snow outside is lifeless without a breeze
And the frightful face of winter perishes
No longer do I fret of the cold, the damp
It has no power over me, nor any man
The strength God has given me grows
And I am like a tempest in a cave
Hovering, listless and joined with spirit
Working with the forces of Nature
To bring the life into my old bones
So that I can follow great things, great love

Another Day

Smooth as Black Velvet in the winter
A taste of whiskey coating the lips
The cold is home to the eventual life
Making a place holder of snow covering all
The wind catches it as it floats down
And howls with the cold, the frozen earth
Is a promise that one day, the warmth returns
The sun will be a stranger no longer
And so we regard the difficulty of the moment
Just a simple nuisance, as we can see
The growing drifts surrounding us
We need not suffer or worry in this storm
It is here today, gone another day

And there is still Black Velvet

Into My Heart

My soul curls up in a ball
As I reach deeply to find the infinite
A grand gesture to pull energy inside
And then, with a ray of light
I am awakened, brought to the opening
Of the great black hole of shame
Wondering why the darkness comes so easy
While the Light stands far off
I begin to feel the comfort
As I reach for the goodness within
And I stretch, pull, and understand
Where my heart is and why
I cannot see through the darkness
But now I know the Light is there
And soon it will be smiling
Upon my face, reaching into my heart

Too Much Pride

A glimmer settles into my mind’s eye
The Light pouring forth like sunshine
Different colored irises in the night:  green, blue
Millions of little stars passing through
And then it dawns upon me to see
The makeup of the Universe
The wheels that grind through each day
To exhibit the strength  of the unseen
Then the creatures of Light not so unlike
The creatures we see here on earth
And I realize the need to be mindful
Of the grand design, the perfection of all things
The relation of all things, stone, animal, plants
And the one which carries too much pride:  man
