Brighter

When age begins to creep up on you
And the days seem to pass so quickly
You may find that time is empty
And you wonder what to do with yourself
You meditate on the healing and wellness
Of those you love, those you miss
You grasp concepts you never thought you would
And you wonder if you can solve
The ills of the world, the darkness
That shadows bring into being
That struggle inside of you now
That puts you down inside a cavern
And you extend hope and your inner light
So that you can make all things brighter

The Universe Knows

Sometimes detours are meant to be on our paths
While we think in our minds that our daily cycle
Includes this and this and this
We plan and schedule just what we think
We make up our minds to lay the path before us
Yet sometimes, something happens that begs a detour
The Universe says, “Whoa up.  You need to do this.”
And so the change comes and we see
That something or someone needed us to be there
On a different path, if only for a short time
It may be something big or something small
It doesn’t matter
It may be something that allows for needed rest
You may never know the reason for a detour
But the Universe knows and allows for good
Whether to help someone, help yourself, rest

The Universe knows

Mighty Mac

The waters of Michigan and Huron writhing beneath it
He emerges from the spray as the two converge
The depths below bearing the bones of his makers
Lost too quickly to have been collected, saved
Above, his towers clad in pure white ascend
Up into the clouds on most days as they hold taut
The spans of heavy cables, from which the bridge suspends
All manner of vehicles fly by on the roadbed
Carefully staying in their lanes, tires moaning
The grand bridge known as the Mighty Mac stands tall
Connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan
Making the two, one, surrounded by a hint of mystery
That only the Great Lakes can bestow
The graveyards of many shipwrecks all tolled
The bridge the protector of the travelers
A shining beacon spanning the straits of Mackinac

Learning

Learning new things is not so easy

When you have some knowledge before

The difference is breaking old habits

While allowing the space for new things

You may find that your knowledge sticks

In places where you’d rather it not go

But sooner or later, you learn new tricks

And the spice of life comes to you

New things rest upon old things or replace them

And you blend them as you go

It’s like washing your hair to style it

You get rid of the old goop that holds it

Ready to apply the new conditioners, gels

So that you can be beautiful as always

Choices

Making decisions is the most difficult thing
We wander from one side to the other
We sink to the depths and then soar on the wing
And we don’t know where we’re going
But here is the thing to remember, my friend
To keep your eye on the prize at the end
See it whole and perfect and pleasant
Make it yours, not the response of some trend
And you will get there sure as can be
If you know where you’re going in your heart
There will be no doubt that you will see
The path will develop in front of you
And each step that you take will renew

Your dedication to who you are meant to be

Best Interest

We hear that all things come in due time
And yet we pace the floor, rock in our chairs
Wondering when the things we want will happen
So we do everything we can to fret over them
Never listening to the bright side of things
That we need not worry because God is in charge
Yet, faithful though we may be, we pace on
We want things to happen NOW, in our time
When we have so much more to work on, to do
It may not be our success, it may not be good
But we want what we want and there you have it
Expecting our good to be laid in our laps
The bright and cheery disposition we’ve had
Melts as we try to force our good to come
How do we rid ourselves of our anxieties?
How do we let God take the reins and posts?
Take a deep breath, hold it in, count to four
And let all of the worries float out of us
Cleanse our bodies and minds and believe
That God will give us all good things
In his time, in his way, in our best interest

Dishwasher

Water swirls all around in arcs and droplets
The thrum of the motor pauses, proceeds
Hot water pulses against the walls, dishes
Creating a contained waterspout
I appreciate the work this machine does
My hands are not dry and crusty from dishwater
And the sound of the dishes getting clean
Is like music to my ears, and I breathe
Certainly this is a delight I enjoy
Perhaps I am a little spoiled with this service
But I thrill to the notion that I win
The pleasure of putting my feet up to rest
And all of the other work in the house awaits
My attention, if and when I will do it

Burdens of the Heart

Change is inevitable, that is what they say
All the greatest thinkers warn us
Good things come to those who wait
This we know as well
Yet, how can we be sure
To get the best life has to offer
We can curl up in a ball of sayings
Or we can live our lives to the fullest
Not holding back for the voice of others
Looking for the joy in places and people
Go and experience, enjoy the inner peace
As life becomes calm and the naysayers fall
And no longer do we remain tethered
To the ills of the world,
The burdens of the heart

The Best

All things new erupt in spring
The heat of summer helps them grow
Autumn risks the rest of time
Winter brings the end of things
So the cycle comes and goes
Life is fragile, life is sweet
Ready for the lift of emotion
Giving, taking, wandering, waiting
So the life of each person goes
The good, the bad, the peace of it all
We can be blessed with harmony
If we look to the heights of love
And understand that each being
Is doing the best they can

Invasion

Eyes following your every move
Waiting in every corner you go
Supposing to be friendly, kind
But having an overtone of creepy
How does one evade the gaze
That sneaks up and moves in on you
As if there were some reason
To be in your way, saying, “hello,”
Not having a reason, as you believe
The bit of disconcerting presence
That suggests that you be fearful
What?  Why? Who is this stranger
That takes and makes such confusion
But the hands don’t tremble
The heart refuses to beat faster
And, perhaps, there is a wee bit of anger

Flooding through the mind today

The Moon

Higgety, piggety, the moon is a sphere
Loppety, moppety, we drink its light here
Even beneath the shining orb
We can expect nothing as we absorb
The vibrations of energy in sound and light
Raise the veil, the promise, the chant
For this night, all we desire enters our sight
We must only fare well as we get what we want
When the sun comes up, we are sure to find
The perfect will to open the mind
And understand our power, the Universe
Draws nigh to provide what we rehearse
Bring us, O Great One, our fondest dreams
And allow us harmony in all it seems

Everything

Those not with us anymore
Look down from heights above
They see and know what’s in store
They shower us with love
We may not see them everywhere
For they are on a different plane
But we can feel their tenderness
In places where they’ve lain
If they could send us messages
And I’m sure enough they do
They’d send their love and the best
For all our endeavors, too
They are not on some floating cloud
They’re close at hand, just not loud
And so it seems we can share
The highlights of our day
Not to make the time go faster
But to know we’re on the way
To touching with their heartfelt joy
For that is what they bring

The light, the love, their everything

Everything

Joy

All the ducks in a row at last
All of the boxes checked and i’s dotted
Time to move and go forward, forward
Packing up everything that makes me, me
Paper, peripherals, clothes, books
Bedroom and office, everything goes
How do I feel now that it’s in motion
Glad for a chance to be myself again
Sad for the loss of moments with grandsons
It’s hard to walk away and make plans
For a new life again, a new place, home
Next comes the carrying of all the boxes
The storage to be emptied on arrival
Open the door to change, confidently
Stepping inside the glass dome of time

Ready and able to feel the joy of earth
